Today’s announcement of a fast-track association with Horizon Europe from 2027 is a positive development for Australia’s researchers.

The Regional Universities Network welcomes the announcement as Australia’s access to the Horizon Europe research program will strengthen the research capabilities and research workforces of Australia, including Australia’s regions.

RUN Chief Executive Officer Alec Webb said the joining of Horizon Europe is long overdue and will open further access for regional researchers to further collaborate with European researchers.

“In principle, it is in Australia’s interest to build its research capabilities and deepen its global research ties with international partners and programs such as Horizon Europe.

“Researchers at regional universities conduct world-class research, and access to Horizon Europe will open new doors for collaboration between our researchers and researchers in Europe.

“It is vital that in funding access to Horizon Europe that the Government provide new funding, rather than taking existing funds from already strained and oversubscribed research programs,” said Mr Webb.
