RUN welcomes opportunity to contribute to the Australian Tertiary Education Commission (ATEC) consultation: Review of Research Requirements: ‘Australian University Category’. RUN holds the strong view that universities operating within Australia’s higher education system ought to conduct a broad range of research, recognised as world-class or greater. RUN therefore does not oppose the option for a university to elect to narrow its research focus, when deemed to be in the interest of its distinct social mission. This narrowing of research focus, however, must be a decision undertaken at the sole discretion of the university in question.
