The Regional Universities Network (RUN) welcomes the Productivity Commission’s 5-Year Productivity Inquiry: Advancing Prosperity report to improve Australia’s productivity performance.

Executive Director of RUN, Alec Webb, said that RUN was glad to see that the Productivity Commission recognised the importance of universities and the role of higher education in driving Australia’s economic growth.

“The Productivity Commission’s Advancing Prosperity report highlights the importance of Australia’s higher education sector while also noting the discrepancies that currently exist in institutional funding, a situation which disproportionally impacts regional universities.

“Regional universities provide opportunities for all Australians, especially those students who have been traditionally underrepresented in Australia’s higher education sector.

“Increasing access to tertiary education in Australia’s regions and providing additional support to students, as recommended in the report will benefit all Australians, both now and into the future.

“The report has timely recommendations that require careful consideration, especially as the higher education sector engages with the Australian Universities Accord and RUN looks forward to engaging with Minister Clare and the Australian Universities Accord panel to improve student access to university and student support mechanisms,” said Mr Webb.
